What I thought was going to be great Sunday morning started out to be a disaster! We woke up bright and early in order to make the bus to get to church but we went out to the bus stop, waited for 20 minutes for the bus to come, got on, and then realized it was the wrong bus! So we got off, only a couple blocks from our dorm room. We asked our instructor if the church was close enough to walk to in a half hour (cuz that’s all we had left before church started) and she thought maybe so we started walking to church. After 15 minutes, though, she told us we still had 3-4 miles!!! We were all really frustrated but were DETERMINED to get to church! So, we decided to hale down a cab but we didn’t have an address to the church so we just tried to guide him down the street. All we knew was the church was off to the left close to the McDonalds down the road we were on. The cab driver dropped our first group off at McDonalds and we were supposed to wait for the other group. After 5 minutes or so though, they didn’t show so and we had less than 3 minutes to get to church so we just went walking! We tried asking people and finally found someone that spoke a little broken English. We tried to explain to him that we were looking for the Mormon Church but he didn’t get it. So I just put my hands together (like Buddhist praying) and said “American church” and all of sudden he knew what we meant! He sent us down the street we were already on. Of course, we were skeptical because we weren’t even sure if he understood us!! Half way down the street, we decided to say a prayer to Heavenly Father and ask Him to help us get to the church because we were trying so hard! Right as we said “Amen” the guy drove by on his scooter and said, “Down the street, to the left!” We were so shocked and just started booking it down the road! JUST around the corner was a nice building that could definitely be the church! We got around the front side but the writing on the building was only in Chinese!! Then, a boy came out of the building in a shirt and ties and we KNEW we were in the right place! It was an absolute miracle that we made it!! We met the sister missionaries as we walked into the building and they took us upstairs where they held sacrament meeting! I have never had such a wonderful, rewarding sacrament meeting…even though it was completely in Chinese. The members were so nice and tried so hard to speak to us in English. We had a blast! And, the sisters were so nice to us! There was one sister, Sister Tan, who was so happy to talk to us in English. She is from Utah and was so happy to have us come to their ward. Needless to say, a disastrous morning turned into a wonderfully spiritual, uplifting day.
Sundays are our resting days so we went back to the apartment and took a nap. We had planned to go hiking with one of the Oncology nurses for mother’s day so at four o’clock we all got up from our naps and put on our workout clothes. The hike was actually really fun. I have no idea where we went but it walked up into a jungle-like area and through a bunch of beautiful scenery.
We got home Sunday night and were ready for bed. Of course, we didn’t go to bed though. We talked to family all night and still had to get up early for clinical the next morning. We were not exactly excited about that…
